About Us

Our fellowship was founded in 1882 as the Bethel Baptist Church and the first building was build in 1886. In 1962 a new sanctuary and fellowship hall replaced the parsonage. In 1978 the old building was moved to the city park so a large addition with class rooms and larger fellowship hall could be added to the new building.

We are a member of American Baptist Churches of Oregon.

It’s always wise to have a purpose.  It is no different for a church.  In fact purpose becomes more important because of the eternal implications!  Our purpose statement, based on Acts 2: 42-47, expresses WHAT we are called to do: to pray and live daily to fulfill the five purposes, Worship, Fellowship, Maturity, Ministry and Evangelism.

Praying and living daily for Christ we:

Joyfully praise God

Encourage each other

Strive for maturity in Christ

Use our gifts to serve

WHAT we do!

As stated, our purpose is WHAT we do.  The Vision of First Baptist Church of Gresham is WHY we do those things.  Our vision is based on Matthew 22: 36 when Jesus was asked what’s the greatest commandment.  We took Jesus’ answer to heart and developed a simple, memorable phrase that is to guide all that we do; “Becoming fully devoted followers of Christ so we can draw others to Him.”  We recognize that the key to our Faith is our relationship with God and next to that is our relationship with others.

The people of First Baptist Church of Gresham are a committed, loving body of Christ. We know Him and love Him.  We continually strive to follow Him and obey Him.  Do you want to know Him more?  Spend some time with us!

First Baptist Church of Gresham (affiliated with American Baptist Churches/USA) has been on the corner of Powell and Walters for a long time – over 125 years!  The building has changed multiple times, the Heart hasn’t.  From all historical accounts the people of this church have been continual disciples of Christ, maturing in their faith and striving to share with others the One who brings Hope.
